“Absolutely,” Hill responded when asked whether more music was coming. “There was an incredible healing process that happened with us as a band and as bandmates, and as you said we just want to showcase that and give some of that energy to the world as well.”

The Fugees originally captured global attention with their 1996 breakthrough record The Score, which featured enduring classics including “Fu-Gee-La” and “Killing Me Softly.” Their debut effort, Blunted on Reality, arrived two years earlier in 1994.

Diaspora Calling! Festival Arrives in the UK

Both performers were preparing for Diaspora Calling!, a one-day celebration headlined by Hill that marks its British premiere at the Milton Keynes National Bowl this Friday. The event commemorates the thirtieth anniversary of The Score while showcasing diverse talent across multiple genres.

Alongside Hill and Jean, the lineup includes Erykah Badu, Giggs, Fireboy DML, YG Marley, and Zion Marley. Comedian Dave Chappelle will serve as master of ceremonies for the gathering.

“I remember saying from a very young age, we’re not going to do music, we’re going to be a movement,” Jean reflected on the group’s original vision. “When you talk about the idea of refugees, look where we are today. We were saying these things 30 years ago. It was never just about us – it was always about the movement.”

Pras Michel Remains Incarcerated

While Hill and Jean’s renewed connection has generated considerable enthusiasm, neither artist has officially confirmed that recording sessions for new material are underway. The Fugees’ third member, Pras Michel, continues serving a fourteen-year prison term in the United States following his conviction related to federal lobbying and fraud charges.

Advice for the Next Generation

During their London appearance, the veteran musicians shared guidance for emerging artists navigating today’s digital landscape. Jean observed that many younger performers are moving away from chasing viral moments on social platforms.

“The kids are saying, ‘I don’t want to be on TikTok like that. I don’t want to be on Instagram. I’m not trying to go viral. I just need people to listen to my music and engage with my music,'” Jean explained.

Hill emphasized the importance of patience and authentic connection in an era dominated by algorithms.

“Art is not gone yet,” she stated. “Patience is a virtue. You want it in 30 seconds, but it isn’t going to happen in 30 seconds. If you keep coming together with a positive plan and saying, ‘We want to be heard,’ then you’ll be heard. Find like-minded individuals. Respect your audience, respect yourself.”

Reflecting on why London felt like the ideal location for the festival launch, Hill noted the city’s rich diaspora community. “There’s so much of the diaspora in London,” she said. “So many people are represented here. It felt like a full-circle moment for us.”
