To reach a more workable target of 25 senior players, Chelsea must move on 16 individuals before September begins. Recent Signings and Squad Composition

Chelsea have largely assembled Alonso’s roster through recent acquisitions. The incoming players include Morgan Rogers, Marco Palestra, Danny Welbeck, Jordan Henderson, and Maxence Lacroix, with full-back Pep Chavarria nearing completion of his move from Rayo Vallecano for £16.3m. These additions, combined with existing talent, have created depth but also congestion in certain positions.

The squad’s size became evident during Wednesday’s 1-0 loss to Juventus in Hong Kong, where Chelsea fielded 21 substitutes—only five of whom came through the academy. The club deliberately brought a large group on their Asian tour, planning to face AC Milan in Indonesia on Saturday and Malaysian champions Johor Darul Ta’zim on Sunday, potentially using two different starting lineups.

Players Available for Departure

Several Chelsea players are currently unavailable for action. Midweek, both Cole Palmer and Levi Colwill missed the match due to injuries picked up in earlier friendlies, while striker Emmanuel Emegha continues his hamstring recovery at the training ground. Additionally, five players are not even training with the first team: Benoit Badiashile, Axel Disasi, Marc Guiu, David Datro Fofana, and Caleb Wiley—all of whom remain available for permanent transfers or loan spells.

Positional Analysis and Future Plans

Chelsea finished 10th in the league this campaign, ending their European campaign after Enzo Maresca’s departure and Liam Rosenior’s dismissal. Alonso now faces numerous decisions across the pitch.

Goalkeeping appears settled, with Robert Sanchez and 21-year-old Belgian prospect Mike Penders—impressive during his Strasbourg loan—forming the first two options. Teddy Sharman-Lowe is expected to serve as third choice.

At full-back, captain Reece James, who can also operate in midfield, shares the right side with Gusto and Palestra. Manchester City have emerged as potential suitors for Gusto, who carries a £75m price tag. On the left, Jorrel Hato and the incoming Chavarria provide competition.

The central defense presents the most significant challenge. Alonso has indicated the nine players currently in this area need reducing to four or five. Disasi and Badiashile are available for sale, while Mamadou Sarr is expected to leave on loan. This would leave Lacroix competing with Levi Colwill, Josh Acheampong, Wesley Fofana, and Tosin Adarabioyo. Argentina Under-20 international Aaron Anselmino, who spent last season with Borussia Dortmund and Strasbourg, is also likely to depart on loan.

In midfield, Enzo Fernandez has been valued at £120m while exploring his options, though the club remains open to keeping him. Meanwhile, Mykhailo Mudryk returns to action after a 20-month absence, adding further depth to an already crowded roster.

Chelsea’s financial situation has improved under UEFA’s settlement agreement, which binds them for three additional seasons.
