Bystanders rush to rescue aircraft passengers – A private jet crash on a Texas motorway on Tuesday prompted nearly a dozen bystanders and emergency personnel to act swiftly. Video footage captured the crowd working together to free passengers, employing tools like a shovel and sledgehammer to clear debris from an open door. The incident occurred near Laredo airport, approximately 150 meters southwest of San Antonio, and disrupted traffic on Loop 20, a major highway, as authorities investigated.
Rescue efforts and casualties
Residents and first responders arrived at the crash site within minutes, collaborating to extract those in danger. One of the six individuals aboard the aircraft lost their life, according to police, while the remaining five were hospitalized in stable condition. The identity of the deceased has not yet been confirmed.
“The plane was en route from Los Cabos, Mexico, to Austin, Texas, when it notified Laredo airport of significant mechanical problems,” stated Gilberto Sanchez, the airport’s director, in an interview with the New York Times.
Impact on nearby vehicles
During the crash, a vehicle was damaged by the aircraft as it landed on the motorway. Jose Baeza, an investigator with the Laredo Police Department, noted that the specific part of the plane responsible for the collision remains under review. The aftermath, shared on social media, revealed thick smoke and flames engulfing the wreckage.
“Five first responders were treated for smoke inhalation as the situation unfolded,” added Baeza, highlighting the ongoing investigation involving the FBI and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
The closure of Loop 20 is expected to continue through Wednesday as officials work to determine the cause of the crash. The event underscores the quick response of civilians and emergency teams in critical situations.
