From Factory Floor to World Cup Hero – Deniz Undav’s Remarkable Rise
From factory floor to World Cup star – Deniz Undav has emerged as a pivotal figure for Germany in the World Cup, defying early doubts from his manager. After a contentious exchange with Julian Nagelsmann in March, the 29-year-old striker has since silenced critics with standout performances. His brace in Germany’s dramatic 2-1 comeback against Ivory Coast not only propelled them into the knockout stages but also solidified his reputation as a clutch performer.
Undav’s current form is impressive, with three goals and two assists in just two substitute appearances. This brings his total goal contributions to five, matching the record set by Cameroon’s Roger Milla in 1990 for most goal involvements by a World Cup replacement since 1966. Despite initial reservations, Nagelsmann now acknowledges Undav’s value, stating, “He came in twice and got goals twice. Why should I ruin his flow? He is great moving around when the game opens up.”
A Career Built on Resilience
Undav’s path to international stardom was anything but conventional. At 14, he was rejected by Werder Bremen for being too small, a setback that left him heartbroken. However, he refused to give up, working eight-hour shifts at a factory while balancing semi-professional football in Germany’s fourth tier. “I had to do that job for the money to live,” he explained in a 7sur7 interview. “I couldn’t survive on football alone.”
“When Werder told me at 14 that I didn’t have a future with them because I was too small, it broke my heart,” Undav said. “But I did not abandon hope. I left the family home at 17 to sign for Havelse, where I combined playing and training with operating a laser machine in a factory.”
Undav’s persistence paid off. He moved to Belgium’s second division in 2020, helping Union Saint-Gilloise secure promotion before scoring 25 goals in their top-flight campaign. This led to a transfer to Brighton, where he had a mixed season before being loaned to Stuttgart. His 19 Bundesliga goals in 2025-26, which placed him second in the scoring chart behind Harry Kane, earned him a spot in the World Cup squad.
Germany’s recent 4-0 friendly win over Finland showcased Undav’s growing importance. “I wanted to have it last time, it didn’t work,” he said after the match. “Its wonderful, a fantastic feeling. For me to get the t…” His performance in that game, along with his crucial role against Ivory Coast, has made him a serious contender for a starting position in the tournament’s next phase.
