CCTV Footage Reveals Events Before Arrest in Edinburgh Anti-Muslim Attacks Investigation
Man Identified in Series of Nighttime Incidents
CCTV shows moments leading up to arrest – Recent CCTV recordings have captured the sequence of events leading to the detention of an individual suspected in multiple anti-Muslim attacks across Edinburgh. The footage depicts a topless man driving in a reckless manner before leaving his vehicle and confronting two pedestrians. One of the victims is a black man, while the other is a delivery rider, both of whom are seen interacting with the assailant while he smokes and brandishes two large knives.
Authorities reported five individuals were injured during assaults across multiple sites in Edinburgh on the evening of Friday. Counter-terrorism units were involved in the investigation, which began at the Broomhouse Mosque in the city’s western district. Two of the injured men had recently attended prayer at the mosque, approximately half an hour prior to the attacks.
Incident Details and Public Reaction
The video shows the man swerving his dark car onto Leith Walk, crossing into a cycle lane. He exits the vehicle, runs toward a man on an e-bike, and disappears from view. After briefly re-entering his car, he emerges again to attack a black man who had stepped off a tram. The assailant strikes repeatedly with the knives, then pursues a delivery rider on an e-bike, causing him to fall. By the time police arrive, the man has already been detained.
“It doesn’t make sense that this is actually happening,” said a community member connected to Edinburgh’s Muslim networks. “You know how Edinburgh is, a very good community. I never thought that’s a thing that would happen here.”
Aaquil Hussain, a mosque liaison officer, described the attacks as an “affront to British values.” He emphasized that while the incidents do not reflect the broader community, the Muslim population remains “shook but resilient.” “We’re proud to live in Edinburgh,” he added. “We will get on with it, this will pass.”
Investigation and Official Statements
Police Scotland confirmed that a 36-year-old man was apprehended after officers equipped with Tasers subdued him. Though the devices were not fired, he has since been charged. Asst Ch Con Paton called the attack “shocking,” urging solidarity against racism and faith-based hate. “There is no place for these attitudes in a Scotland at its best,” she stated.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer labeled the suspect’s actions as driven by “anti-Muslim hatred,” while First Minister John Swinney condemned the violence as “unacceptable.” Swinney is set to meet local Muslim leaders on Monday to discuss the incidents. The events in Edinburgh occurred during a tense period for the UK, marked by heightened concerns over extremism.
Further details emerged as the attacker was linked to a Shell petrol station on Telford Road, where a taxi driver was confronted, his vehicle damaged, and an axe thrown through the window. Additional social media videos show the man causing disturbances elsewhere, including a BP station on Ferry Road where he stood beside a smashed car and vandalized the premises.
