Queen Welcomes Author JK Rowling to Kick Off Royal Week in Edinburgh
Queen meets author JK Rowling to mark – The Queen joined forces with acclaimed writer JK Rowling during the opening of Royal Week in Edinburgh, a tradition held annually in the Scottish capital. Their conversation centered on fostering a love of reading among children, a topic both have championed throughout their careers. Rowling, famed for the Harry Potter series, is listed as having a personal fortune of £975m by the Sunday Times Rich List. She previously penned parts of her work at the Elephant House café, which had been damaged by a fire in 2021 and reopened in December.
Opening Ceremony and Military Honors
King Charles III initiated the Royal Week with a formal event at the Palace of Holyroodhouse. The ceremony began with the Crown of Scotland being paraded down the Royal Mile, followed by a brass fanfare from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Prior to the main proceedings, the palace gardens were transformed into a parade ground, where the King received a royal salute and inspected a guard of honor from the Royal Company of Archers.
“We, the Lord Provost and members of the City of Edinburgh Council, welcome Your Majesty to the capital city of your ancient and hereditary kingdom of Scotland, and offer for your gracious acceptance the keys of Your Majesty’s good city of Edinburgh,” stated Robert Aldridge, the Lord Provost of Edinburgh.
Aldridge presented the keys to the city to the King, who responded with a symbolic gesture: “I return these keys perfectly convinced that they cannot be placed in better hands than those of the Lord Provost and councillors of my good city of Edinburgh.”
Royal Week Activities and Honors
As part of the week-long celebrations, the King also engaged with senior political figures, including First Minister John Swinney and the new presiding officer of the Scottish Parliament, Kenneth Gibson. On Saturday, he officially opened the new session of the Scottish Parliament, marking the seventh Holyrood session since its creation in 1999. The events will continue with an investiture ceremony and garden party at Holyrood Park, joined by Queen Camilla, the Duke of Edinburgh, and the Princess Royal.
Meanwhile, the New Year Honours list featured notable recipients such as forensic scientist Lorna Dawson, who was elevated to damehood, and New Seekers artist Eve Graham, honored for her contributions to the music industry. Simon Milne, the regius keeper of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, also received a knighthood for his work in botany and conservation.
Controversy and Cultural Significance
Rowling’s participation in the event comes amid ongoing discussions with former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP government regarding gender identification policies. Despite this, her legacy as a literary icon remains prominent, with her writings continuing to inspire readers globally. Royal Week, or Holyrood Week, serves as a platform to highlight Scottish culture, community achievements, and the enduring role of the monarchy in national life.
