Boy, 3, was attacked by crocodile at zoo as man bailed
Crocodile Attack at Cambridgeshire Zoo Leaves Boy in Critical Condition
Incident and Initial Response
Boy 3 was attacked by crocodile - A three-year-old child suffered severe injuries after being attacked by a crocodile in a zoo enclosure, confirmed by Cambridgeshire Police. The boy was pulled from the water by staff and received immediate care at the scene before being transported to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge.
The assailant, a 30-year-old man from Norfolk, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder but has since been released on bail. He is currently deemed "unfit for interview" due to his physical or mental state, according to police.
Zoo Closure and Family Support
The zoo’s Tropical House, where the incident occurred, was closed on Thursday "out of respect to the family." Staff arrived early at the site, and it is scheduled to reopen at 10:00. Johnsons of Old Hurst, the family-run business behind the zoo, expressed their condolences, stating their thoughts and prayers are with the boy and his family.
"Our inquiries are ongoing as we continue to understand the circumstances surrounding this distressing incident. Our thoughts are with the boy, and his family. Specialist officers remain in contact to support them through this difficult time," said Det Insp Verity McCann.
Crocodile Enclosure and History
The crocodiles, which have been part of the zoo since 2006, reside in a converted cattle barn with metal-fenced elevated walkways. The enclosure is surrounded by tropical vegetation and large water pools. The facility was originally a farm shop and now includes a butchers, tea room, steakhouse, and zoo.
To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the first farm shop, a new museum was set to open with a special weekend event starting on Saturday. It is unclear whether the event will proceed as planned.
Investigation and Details
Police are investigating how long the boy was inside the enclosure before the attack. They emphasized that the man arrested and the child are not known to each other. A Magpas Air Ambulance team responded at 13:42, treating one patient on-site before transporting them to hospital.
"We do not believe the man arrested and the child are known to each other," stated a police spokesperson.
Community and Context
Huntingdon MP Ben Obese-Jecty called for restraint in online speculation, noting the incident is being treated as critical. The zoo, which houses over 100 animals including crocodiles, African lions, and a Bengal tiger, continues to operate while authorities review the event.
