British man held in Ecuador after - A woman's remains were uncovered in a suitcase during a search in Colombia, prompting the arrest of a British national in Ecuador. Matthew Ashley Foster-Smith, 46, from Bournemouth, Dorset, is accused of fatally assaulting Natalia Villalba, 36, in an apartment in Bogota on June 18. Local authorities stated that he allegedly beat her to death before packing her body into a suitcase to hide evidence and escape the scene.
Interpol Involved in International Pursuit
Colombian prosecutors secured an arrest warrant, leading to the issuance of an Interpol Red Notice. Foster-Smith was apprehended at Quito International Airport in Ecuador. The mayor of Bogota, Carlos Fernando Galan, noted that Dorset Police collaborated in locating him.
"We are supporting a British man who has been detained in Ecuador and are in touch with the local authorities," said a spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.
Previous Conviction and Restrictive Measures
Before this incident, Foster-Smith served a two-year-and-two-month sentence for stalking offenses in 2023. Upon release, he faced indefinite conditions under a stalking prevention order. Issued in January by Poole Magistrates' Court, the order required him to report his address and vehicle details to police regularly and barred him from contacting his victims. Electronic communication devices were also restricted as part of the measure.
