Unusual Big Cat Sightings Reported Across Welsh Countryside
Facts from a Public Request
Canadian lynx one of big cat sightings - A recent Freedom of Information (FOI) request revealed that 15 "big cats" have been reported in Wales between January 2020 and July 2025. These sightings spanned multiple regions, including Pembrokeshire, Ceredigion, Powys, Swansea, Denbighshire, and Carmarthenshire. Among the animals noted were a panther, a leopard, and a Canadian lynx, according to the data obtained from the Welsh government.
Panther Encounter in Ceredigion
A panther sighting was documented in Ceredigion by a local observer. The individual claimed to have seen a "large black cat" leap over a hedge onto the road while driving. The creature then "pounced across the road" before jumping over another hedge. Descriptions included a "jet black, smooth/short coat, muscular, long tail, and the size of a Labrador dog," though the observer later identified it as a panther after reviewing online images.
"I saw a large black cat come over the hedge and land on the road in front of me," the witness said. "It looked exactly like a panther after I checked the photo."
Leopard Spotting in Swansea
In Swansea, a leopard was reportedly spotted in Cwmtwrch on 16 January 2023. The claimant described the animal as "a leopard with spots walking around the garden when their dog was let out." They noted the dog showed no fear and that "security lights kept coming on as it was walking around." Despite the report, no evidence was provided, and officials were unable to follow up after contacting the witness.
Canadian Lynx in Carmarthenshire
A Canadian lynx was reportedly seen in Port Henri, Carmarthenshire, on 13 May 2025. The sighting, though unverified, led to no further action. The report mentioned no additional sightings or livestock attacks, leaving the claim unconfirmed.
Puma-Sized Cat in Denbighshire
On 25 October 2023, a "puma-sized cat" was reported in Fairy Falls, Trefnant, Denbighshire. North Wales Police investigated but concluded it was not a real cat. The incident received no follow-up from authorities, as no other reports were made.
