Heatwave Traps Motorists on M25 Amid Major Crash

Emergency calls as traffic stranded on M25 - A collision between a van and lorry on the M25 has caused severe traffic delays, with drivers stuck in gridlocked conditions during a record-breaking heatwave. The incident, which involved a man airlifted to hospital, has left many stranded for hours as temperatures soar to unprecedented levels.

Emergency Response and Ambulance Efforts

The South East Coast Ambulance Service (Secamb) reported responding to multiple patients near junctions six and seven on the M25, close to Godstone. The motorway was partially closed following the crash, and crews prioritized the most critical cases as congestion made access to those in need challenging. A spokesperson described the situation as "severe and prolonged," noting vehicles remained stationary for hours under the red heat alert.

"This has resulted in a number of calls from people suffering from heat-related illnesses including a number of coach passengers," said the ambulance service.

Social Media Outcry Over Stranded Travelers

As temperatures hit 36.1C, social media users voiced concerns about the plight of those stuck on the motorway. Folkestone and Hythe MP Tony Vaughan urged authorities to act: "Please sort this out urgently. People need water and some may need evacuation. You have protocols for this situation—please implement them—this is an emergency!" He shared that a constituent had been trapped near Oxted for eight hours, with temperatures reaching 40 degrees in her car.

"It is 40 degrees in her car. She has kids with her. She is running out of water," Vaughan added.

Another user, Susan Taylor, highlighted the struggle: "My daughter and I were stuck in this from 10.15am. We also had a minor bump from a poor lady who collapsed at the wheel of her car due to heat stroke." She praised emergency crews and drivers who provided water and ice during the ordeal.

"Thanking emergency crews 'struggling through the traffic,' she added: 'Also a huge thank you to the other drivers who helped and to the drivers that passed handing us water and even ice appeared.'"

Kathy Matthews, a motorist stuck for five hours, turned off her air conditioning to conserve fuel. She expressed relief at not having a heart condition, stating, "When I managed to get to Shell I felt very wobbly." Others reported elderly passengers, infants, and individuals with health conditions enduring the heat, with some calling for coordinated water distribution.

Surrey Police Updates

Surrey Police confirmed a white Mercedes Vito van and a white lorry were involved in the crash. The male patient, in his 30s, suffered a leg injury and will receive further treatment in hospital. The force emphasized that a significant oil spillage damaged the road surface, and National Highways engineers are assessing the damage before reopening the carriageway.

"One of the vehicles is currently being recovered, and a significant oil spillage from the collision has caused damage to the road surface," stated a police spokesperson.

Delays are expected as the closure at junction five continues. Drivers are advised to anticipate lengthy wait times in the affected area.
