Ex-Olympian's wife 'feared he would kill her'

Ex Olympian s wife feared he would - A former Olympic athlete's spouse has testified that she believed her husband might kill her if they remained married, according to evidence presented at Chester Crown Court. Curtis Robb, 54, is accused of displaying controlling and coercive behavior toward Sarah Robb over a span of more than two decades, from December 2015 to August 2023. As a medical professional, Robb competed for Great Britain in the 800 metres at the 1992 and 1996 Olympics before transitioning to a career as an orthopaedic surgeon.

Testimony Details

Prosecutor Paulinus Barnes outlined the couple's 22-year partnership, highlighting their shared profession and three children. Despite their public image as a harmonious pair, the court was told there were hidden tensions. Barnes emphasized that Robb's actions included physical violence, verbal abuse, and relentless criticism, creating a toxic environment for Sarah.

"On the surface, they appeared happy and successful, but their relationship had a darker side," Barnes stated. "Over many years, Curtis Robb was not only cruel but also physically violent."

The case took a critical turn during a family trip to the Lake District in Easter 2023. Following an argument, Sarah claimed Robb launched an unprovoked attack by covering her face with a pillow. She described feeling unable to breathe, though she was unsure of the exact duration of the incident. This moment, she said, made her realize she had to leave the marriage to survive.

"It was rock bottom because I knew then I had to leave. If I didn’t, I was going to end up dead," Sarah stated.

Allegations of Abuse

Barnes detailed Sarah's account of repeated assaults, including two incidents during her pregnancy with their third child. In one, Robb "thumped" her on the arm, leaving bruises. In another, he punched her while driving, striking her arm and side. The prosecutor also cited derogatory remarks, such as calling her "a manipulative bitch" and "neurotic," which Sarah said diminished her confidence as both a mother and a GP.

"He told her she couldn’t cope in her role as a parent or a doctor," Barnes explained. "Over time, she learned to suppress her emotions, fearing the consequences of speaking out."

Defense Claims

Robb, from Northwich, Cheshire, denies all charges, including suffocation and coercive behavior. He argued that Sarah was the "controlling one" and claimed she had initiated the argument during the Easter 2023 holiday. While admitting to throwing a pillow, he insisted it was not placed over her face, asserting she had brought the situation upon herself.

The trial continues as the court weighs the evidence of years of psychological and physical abuse against Robb's assertions of innocence.
