Funeral held for baby shot dead by Israeli troops in occupied West Bank
Funeral Held for Infant Killed in West Bank Shooting
Funeral held for baby shot dead - A seven-month-old Palestinian baby, Sam Fahd Abu Haikal, was laid to rest in Hebron following his death from a gunshot wound inflicted by Israeli troops. The incident occurred during a routine drive with his family in the occupied West Bank, sparking debate over the circumstances of the attack.
Shooting Incident in Tel Rumeida
According to Israeli military sources, a bullet was fired at the vehicle on Friday evening in the Tel Rumeida area when soldiers believed they faced a threat. The family maintained they followed orders to stop and posed no danger. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the victims were "uninvolved civilians" and expressed "deep sorrow" over the event.
"When more than one bullet is fired, with no warning shot or prior notice, it can't be a mistake!"
Fahd, the boy's father, criticized the IDF's acknowledgment of regret, insisting the shooting was intentional. He described the moment as harrowing, recounting how the bullets struck their car after it came to a halt. "The soldier that shot at us was 10 meters away. The bullet penetrated the front windshield, went through my arm, and then struck my son in the head and my wife in the face," Fahd said.
Witness Accounts and Local Context
Residents near the checkpoint where the shooting took place showed traces of blood on the road, suggesting the tragedy's immediate impact. A local informant, who wished to remain unnamed, reported hearing two shots fired and noted the presence of four soldiers at the scene. The family's home is located just beyond an Israeli checkpoint, highlighting the proximity of daily life to military activity.
Tel Rumeida, a contested area in Hebron, is where Israeli settlers and Palestinian residents coexist. The region has seen heightened tensions, with a heavy Israeli military presence aimed at safeguarding settlers. Despite the calm demeanor of children playing near the checkpoint, the area remains a flashpoint for conflict.
Escalation in West Bank Violence
Since the Hamas-led attacks in southern Israel on October 7, 2023, deadly clashes between Palestinians, Jewish settlers, and Israeli forces have intensified across the occupied West Bank. Palestinian health ministry data indicates over 1,000 Palestinians—militants and civilians—have been killed in this period. Meanwhile, at least 44 Israelis, including civilians and soldiers, have lost their lives in retaliatory operations or attacks.
Israel's extensive military campaign in the Gaza Strip, launched in response, has led to the deaths of more than 70,600 individuals, as reported by Hamas-run health authorities. The funeral of Sam Fahd Abu Haikal stands as a poignant reminder of the human toll amid ongoing hostilities in the region.
