Idris Elba: 'Don't try to make James Bond woke'

Idris Elba - British actor Sir Idris Elba has voiced his belief that the James Bond character should maintain its classic identity, arguing against efforts to infuse it with more modern, socially conscious themes. While acknowledging the admiration from fans, he emphasized that some viewers might not embrace a black male portraying 007. Elba, who has long stated he wasn’t in the running for the role despite persistent rumors, shared his thoughts with GQ during a recent interview.

"Bond is written the way he is for a reason," Elba remarked. "But I was flattered by the suggestion. In realistic terms, some markets just don’t go for that. Bond is big all over the world, and [audiences] won’t [all] go for a black male, an African male, playing Bond. That’s not what they like in their culture. Period."

Elba further suggested that while Bond’s portrayal could benefit from a touch of realism, it shouldn’t become overly "woke." He highlighted the importance of preserving Bond’s essence as escapism, stating, "Don’t try to answer the world’s taste. Just be Bond."

Currently, Elba is portraying Man-at-Arms in the film *Masters of the Universe*. During the interview, he humorously noted the contrast between his latest character and himself. "Talk about recasting," he said. "I was a bit conscious about it. But then I was like, 'What are you talking about?! Man-At-Arms could be any colour! He’s got green legs, for God’s sake!'" The film’s creative choice reflects the evolving nature of character design in modern cinema.

Next James Bond Search Begins

The official search for the next James Bond commenced last month, following years of anticipation and speculation about who would replace Daniel Craig. Recent auditions, as reported by Hollywood outlet Variety, signal the start of a new era for the iconic spy franchise. Amazon Studios confirmed, "While we don’t plan to comment on specific details during the casting process, we’re excited to share more news with 007 fans as soon as the time is right."

Five years have passed since the release of *No Time To Die*, Craig’s final film as Bond. The studio has already revealed that the next movie will be directed by Denis Villeneuve, known for *Dune*, and written by Steven Knight, creator of *Peaky Blinders*. Variety highlighted that Nina Gold, a top casting director with experience on franchises like *Paddington*, *Star Wars*, *Jurassic Park*, and *Mamma Mia!*, is overseeing the search for the new lead actor.

Rumored candidates for the role include Callum Turner, who recently married Dua Lipa, Henry Cavill, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. The selection process remains ongoing, with the goal of finding an actor who can embody the timeless spirit of the Bond legend.
