‘Incredible’: SpaceX rocket spotted off Christmas Island coast
SpaceX Rocket Draws Crowds to Christmas Island Waters
Locals Rush to See the Debris
Ninoda.com – Residents around Christmas Island have been flocking to the coastline since a massive piece of space hardware drifted into view near the island. Workers reportedly slipped away from their jobs to catch a glimpse, while boat owners readied their vessels for a closer inspection of the wreckage floating offshore.
David Watchorn, who chairs the Christmas Island Tourism Association, described the scene as he drove to work and first mistook the object for ordinary shipping traffic.
"It's really incredible to think about what it's been through. The more and more you look at it, the more fascinating it's becoming."
How the Rocket Got There
The 52-metre vehicle had completed a test launch out of Texas on 24 July before splashing down in the Indian Ocean. From that point, currents carried the spent stage toward the Christmas Island coast, where it was subsequently spotted being towed.
Watchorn said he only recognised the object once he realised it was not a vessel at all but, in his words, "a rocket, a space rocket" under tow. The sight has since become a local talking point, with many islanders treating the stranded hardware as an unlikely visitor from the cosmos.
