Lethal Weapon Actor Danny Glover Announces Alzheimer's Diagnosis
Lethal Weapon actor Danny Glover reveals - Danny Glover, the acclaimed American actor and four-time Emmy winner, shared his Alzheimer's disease diagnosis during a recent interview. At 79 years old, he revealed the condition was identified shortly after receiving an honorary Oscar in 2022. Despite experiencing slowed movement, speech, and memory, Glover remains engaged in his work and public life.
Sharing His Story to Combat Stigma
In a pre-recorded conversation with Lester Holt, former NBC Nightly News anchor, Glover discussed his condition on The Today Show. He emphasized the importance of maintaining personal agency. “I can live with it in a sense,” he said. “I’m sure as it advances, things are going to be different and changing.”
"It's really important for him to have control of his own narrative, of his own life story. That's really important. And the time is now. What better time but now for him to speak for himself?"
His daughter, Mandisa, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the family’s goal to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s. They aim to reduce the stigma surrounding the disease by openly discussing its impact.
A Career Spanning Over Four Decades
Glover’s acting journey began in his twenties, culminating in over 170 film and television credits. He gained fame in the 1980s for his role as Detective Roger Murtaugh in the *Lethal Weapon* film series, partnering with Mel Gibson’s Martin Riggs. Other notable works include *Places in the Heart* (1984) and *The Color Purple* (1985).
Alzheimer's Prevalence and Disparities
According to the Alzheimer’s Association, approximately 7 million Americans over 65 live with the disease. Glover, who is part of a demographic at higher risk, noted that older Black individuals are twice as likely to develop Alzheimer’s or another dementia compared to their white counterparts. The cause of this disparity remains unclear.
Art as a Tool for Social Change
Glover, a longtime advocate for social justice, founded a production company to support politically significant films. In the interview, he connected art to societal challenges. “We have challenges in the world. I think art becomes a reframe, a way of looking at that, you know?”

Researchers are exploring early detection methods, such as at-home tests that could identify risk factors before symptoms appear. Studies also suggest menopause may contribute to brain changes similar to those seen in Alzheimer’s.
