Nigerian Army Frees Widow of Retired General After Captivity

Nigerian army frees widow of ex general - The Nigerian military has successfully recovered the wife of Maj Gen Rabe Abubakar, whose body was discovered in custody earlier this week. The couple had been taken hostage in Katsina state’s north-western region late last month. During the rescue, troops reported that the kidnappers opened fire on Mrs. Abubakar before retreating as military forces advanced. She is currently receiving medical care at a military hospital, according to an official statement.

Family Grateful for Rescue

Bilkisu, one of the couple’s daughters, shared the news via WhatsApp, expressing deep gratitude:

"We are deeply grateful to Allah for His mercy and protection. Our mummy has been rescued from the hands of evil by the Nigerian Army." "We pray that Allah grants her good health, complete recovery, peace of mind, and strength after everything she has been through."

Rescue Mission Details

The military stated that the operation to save Mrs. Abubakar followed weeks of focused search efforts. Director of Defence Information, Samaila Uba, explained:

"During sustained offensive operations and pressure mounted on the criminal elements, troops made contact with the bandits... leading to the successful recovery of Mrs. Abubakar."

He emphasized the armed forces’ commitment to supporting her family and continuing operations to locate the kidnappers.

Maj Gen Abubakar’s death in captivity was attributed to health complications, including diabetes and high blood pressure. Officials confirmed his passing on Saturday, following his burial that same day. President Bola Tinubu expressed shock at the incident, calling it a stark reminder of the dangers posed by armed criminal groups in the region.

In north-west Nigeria, bandit groups frequently target civilians for ransom, alongside engaging in cattle rustling and attacks on rural areas. While no group has claimed responsibility for the abductions, militant jihadists also operate in the region. A recent US airstrike in Sokoto state targeted an alleged militant camp on December 25 last year.

A video released on June 6 showed the retired general and his wife appealing to the Katsina government to free detained bandits and their livestock in exchange for their safety. The military’s swift action to recover Mrs. Abubakar highlights ongoing efforts to counter these threats across the country.
