UFC Event at White House Faces Weather Challenges

Thunderstorms threaten Trump s UFC cage - On Sunday, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) will stage its inaugural professional event at the White House, marking a historic occasion for the U.S. presidential residence. The invite-only mixed martial arts gathering on the South Lawn is anticipated to draw around 4,300 spectators, with a nearby fan zone expected to host 85,000 attendees. Despite a lawsuit attempting to block the event, the legal challenge was rejected by a judge, who called it "frivolous" and allowed the UFC fight to proceed.

Weather Warnings Loom Over the Event

The National Weather Service has issued alerts about "damaging thunderstorms" likely to hit Washington DC during the evening, coinciding with the fight’s start at 20:00 EDT. Humidity is forecasted to exceed 70%, while temperatures will hover near 80F (27C). A 70% chance of rain could bring up to half an inch of precipitation, potentially disrupting the spectacle. The weather might also lead to delays, with lightning strikes within eight miles of the venue risking a 30-minute halt.

“The greatest show on Earth”

President Donald Trump, who is celebrating his 80th birthday on the same day, has endorsed the event. He has compared the event’s centerpiece—the "Claw," a 92ft metal structure towering over the octagon—to the Eiffel Tower, highlighting its symbolic value. The fight is part of broader celebrations for America’s 250th anniversary, alongside other events like an IndyCar race and a State Fair.

Legal Concerns and Public Opinion

Just days before the event, a lawsuit was filed by the Public Integrity Project, an anti-corruption law firm in Washington. The case argued that the UFC fight was "deeply corrupt," citing unapproved weigh-ins at the Lincoln Memorial and Trump’s financial ties to Dana White, the UFC’s president. Meanwhile, a Reuters/Ipsos poll revealed skepticism among Americans: 16% supported the White House as a venue for the fight, while 46% found it inappropriate.

The UFC invested $60m in the event, including $700,000 for grass repairs on the South Lawn, which also hosts the annual Easter Egg Roll. The main card will feature Georgian-Spanish lightweight Ilia Topuria and American Justin Gaethje. The event will be broadcast exclusively on Paramount+, a streaming platform backed by Trump ally David Ellison. Last year, the UFC secured a $7.7bn deal with the service, underscoring its growing influence.

Unforeseen Weather Complications

Washington DC is set for a sweltering day, with mid-afternoon temperatures reaching up to 91F (33C). Scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop through the afternoon and evening, accompanied by wind gusts exceeding 50mph. The Weather Channel warns that summer humidity will attract swarms of mosquitoes and gnats, possibly infiltrating the fight arena. Such conditions could challenge both fighters and fans, adding a layer of unpredictability to the historic gathering.
