Tyrannosaurus rex Most Expensive Dinosaur Ever Sold
Tyrannosaurus rex most expensive dinosaur ever - In a historic sale, a Tyrannosaurus rex fossil dating back 67 million years was auctioned for £37.4 million at Sotheby's in New York, surpassing all prior records for dinosaur specimens. The sale, which took place on Tuesday, has not yet revealed the identity of the winning bidder.
Discovery and Significance
The fossil, affectionately named Gus, was unearthed in 2021 on a secluded ranch in South Dakota. Standing over 12 feet tall, it is considered one of the most complete T. rex remains ever discovered, with more than 60% of its bones recovered. According to Sotheby's, this level of preservation makes Gus a rare and valuable find.
"Gus represents not just an extraordinary discovery, but a remarkable example of meticulous excavation and care," remarked Cassandra Hatton, Sotheby's worldwide head of science and natural history.
The auction price broke the previous record set by a stegosaurus in 2024, becoming the first dinosaur sale to exceed $50 million. Some experts suggest this event could signal a shift in how wealthy collectors engage with prehistoric fossils.
Injuries and Preparation
Experts noted that the T. rex's skull bore signs of damage, including bite marks and healed ribs, hinting at past struggles with predators or rival dinosaurs. The fossil's restoration was a lengthy process, requiring three years of lab work following its initial excavation over three summers between 2021 and 2023.
While the buyer's identity remains confidential, the previous stegosaurus record holder, Apex, was loaned to the American Natural History Museum by its owner Kenneth Griffin, a billionaire. This precedent suggests Gus might also find its way to a museum in the near future.
