US and Iran Launch Peace Talks in Switzerland

US and Iran begin talks on initial - Following the signing of a preliminary accord to conclude the conflict, US and Iranian officials have gathered in Switzerland for direct negotiations. The agreement outlines a 60-day window to finalize the deal, along with a mutual pledge to halt hostilities across all fronts, including in Lebanon, and to resume operations in the Strait of Hormuz. However, the critical waterway was temporarily closed by Iran on Saturday, despite evidence suggesting vessels continued to traverse it.

Delegations and Mediation Role

The talks in the Bürgenstock resort feature representatives from both nations. The US delegation includes Vice-President JD Vance, Jared Kushner, and special envoy Steve Witkoff. Iran is represented by parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and military chief Field Marshal Asim Munir have also joined the discussions, leveraging their role as mediators since the conflict began.

“The US hoped for progress on 'the nuclear issue' and Lebanon, while Tehran said it would be 'demanding that the other side fulfill its commitments'.”

Initial Agreement Details

Earlier this week, the US and Iranian presidents inked the initial agreement, aiming for an immediate cessation of hostilities. The plan includes a $300bn investment to aid Iran’s reconstruction and the lifting of all sanctions against the country. Yet, the core issue of Iran’s nuclear program remains unresolved, with negotiations extending for an additional 60 days.

Ongoing Conflicts Amid Ceasefire

Meanwhile, intense fighting between Israel and Hezbollah continues in Lebanon, despite a ceasefire agreement reached on Friday. Israel insists the conflict with Hezbollah is distinct from its broader war against Iran, which started on 28 February. Lebanon became involved shortly after, when Hezbollah retaliated against an Israeli strike that killed Iran’s supreme leader by launching rockets into Israel. Israel responded with a bombing campaign, capturing approximately 5% of southern territory and targeting Hezbollah positions along the border.
