Makerfield by-election: Voters Cast Votes for New MP
Voters head to the polls for Makerfield - Residents of the Greater Manchester constituency, Makerfield, are set to vote for their next Member of Parliament. The by-election, triggered by the resignation of Labour representative Josh Simons, will see over 30 polling stations open at 07:00 BST and remain open until 22:00, following which the official count will begin.
Electoral Context
This contest is one of three parliamentary by-elections happening simultaneously. Voters in the Scottish constituencies of Arbroath, Broughty Ferry, and Aberdeen South are also participating, as their MPs stepped down to take on roles as Members of the Scottish Parliament after May’s Holyrood elections.
More than 14 candidates are vying for the seat, with the outcome anticipated by early Friday. Electoral officials have emphasized the importance of proper identification, accepting documents like passports, driving licenses, and voter authority certificates.
Voting Requirements
Accepted forms of ID include passports, driving licenses, and bus passes. A blue badge or voter authority certificate is also valid. Voters may use outdated photo IDs if the image still matches their appearance. Photocopies are not accepted as valid proof.
