Dubai-to-Tel Aviv Flight Diverted to Saudi Arabia After Cockpit Incident

Ninoda.com – A Flydubai service travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv made an emergency diversion to northeastern Saudi Arabia on Wednesday after an incident involving the aircraft’s pilots. Flight FZ1073, carrying about 150 people, landed at Tabuk Airport rather than continuing to Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport.

Israeli passengers made up most of those on board. The flight had left Dubai International Airport at 03:05 UTC, or 04:05 BST, before events during the journey prompted a major change of course.

Emergency signals and sudden descent

Flight-tracking information showed the aircraft descending sharply over Saudi Arabia roughly two and a half hours after departure. At about 05:21, it lost more than 17,000ft, equivalent to over 5,000m, in under two minutes.

Shortly afterwards, the crew transmitted the 7700 emergency code, a general signal used to indicate an urgent situation. That code was then changed to 7500, which is used to indicate an unlawful interference or hijacking situation. The aircraft later returned to the 7700 code before landing.

The plane briefly crossed into Jordanian airspace before turning back towards Saudi Arabia. At 05:40, it began moving back through Saudi airspace and subsequently carried out a manual descent into Tabuk. Location data placed its landing at 06:58.

Emergency transponder codes do not themselves explain the cause of an event. They alert air traffic controllers and nearby authorities that an aircraft requires immediate attention, allowing airspace and emergency responses to be coordinated quickly.

Accounts describe violence in the cockpit

Early descriptions of the incident suggested a confrontation between two pilots. Later accounts from Israeli officials and passengers described one pilot allegedly stabbing another before being restrained.

Passengers who spoke to media outlets described a frightening sequence of events near the front of the aircraft. Their individual accounts have not been independently verified.

Yasmin Abukasis said her daughter, who was travelling on the flight, told her that a man carrying a knife forced one of the pilots to the floor. Abukasis said her daughter described blood inside the cockpit area, screaming from passengers and a pilot calling for help.

She said other pilots took control while passengers moved towards the man with the knife.

The plane start to lose control. So all the people, they scream, they think they are going,

Abukasis said.

A female passenger described the period when those on board realised the aircraft was descending as “very stressful”. She said people believed the pilots had lost control of the plane.

We understood the pilots lost control,

she said.

There are people here with shirts covered in blood. Now we are fine and want to return home.

Another passenger said people seated near the front intervened after the alleged attack in the cockpit, while two pilots who had been in the rear of the aircraft helped bring it safely down. Those details remain part of witness accounts rather than an official explanation of the incident.

Pilots taken to hospital

The company operating Tabuk Airport said the captain and first officer were injured and were taken to hospital after the landing. It did not identify the cause of their injuries.

Flydubai confirmed that its aircraft had experienced an incident while en route and said every passenger was safe and accounted for. The airline said its teams were working with the relevant authorities and that further information would be issued when available.

The diversion placed the aircraft in Saudi Arabia, a country that does not operate regular commercial air links with Israel. The landing was nevertheless made under emergency circumstances, with the immediate focus on medical care, aircraft safety and the welfare of passengers.

Security response and recovery plans

Israeli and Saudi air forces dispatched fighter jets following the incident. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held urgent consultations and later said the situation was under control.

Aircraft emergencies can trigger responses from several authorities at once. Air traffic control must manage the aircraft’s route and landing priority, airport teams prepare medical and security support, and aviation investigators may later examine communications, cockpit procedures and the chain of events that led to the diversion.

For passengers, the most immediate concern was returning home after the unexpected landing. A separate Flydubai aircraft, flight FZ8455, departed Dubai shortly before 12:56 local time, or 09:56 BST, and was scheduled to reach Tabuk at 14:41 local time, or 12:41 BST. It was expected to collect passengers from the diverted service.

The incident is likely to prompt further scrutiny of what happened inside the cockpit and how control of the aircraft was maintained during the emergency. The available information confirms that FZ1073 landed safely and that passengers were accounted for, while key questions about the alleged stabbing and the pilots’ condition remained unresolved.
