Mohammad Bashir, a close friend of Manchester synagogue attacker, has been handed a life sentence with a minimum term of seventeen years after pleading guilty to preparing for a terrorist act. During their thirteen-minute visit to the prestigious facility, which trains British military personnel, Civil Service staff, and international students, Al-Shamie carefully documented security arrangements on his mobile phone under the classification “espionage”.
Following their reconnaissance mission, both men discarded their mobile devices in an attempt to destroy evidence. However, investigators successfully recovered crucial cloud-based data showing that Al-Shamie had been conducting extensive online searches related to “weapons, potential target sites, and individuals with links to the Israeli military” in preparation for their planned operations.
Extremist Network Exposed
Counter-terrorism officers uncovered the significant relationship between the two men while examining Bashir’s mobile phones in the aftermath of the October 2025 synagogue assault. Greater Manchester Police revealed that WhatsApp conversations between the pair contained numerous antisemitic comments and detailed discussions about preparing for “war” against Western targets.
CCTV footage captured the pair on August 9, 2025, at Manchester’s Al Sunnah Mosque, where they were seen engaging in animated conversation. The surveillance video showed them mistakenly believing they had avoided camera detection and that their private dialogue remained completely unheard by authorities.
Justice Delivered at Manchester Crown Court
Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb delivered a damning assessment of Bashir at Manchester Crown Court, declaring that by August of the previous year he had evolved into a “firmly committed jihadist”. The judge emphasized that both men were “equally engaged” in developing comprehensive plans for a British military assault “in which you and he expected to kill and be killed”.

Just weeks after their Shrivenham visit, Al-Shamie, aged 35, drove his Kia Picanto into the gates of Heaton Park Synagogue and launched a devastating knife attack on worshippers. The assault occurred during Yom Kippur, Judaism’s most sacred day of atonement. Tragically, Melvin Cravitz and Adrian Daulby lost their lives in the incident.
Al-Shamie, who hailed from Prestwich and was wearing a fake suicide belt at the time, was ultimately killed by police gunfire at the scene. While the prosecution noted that the pair had intended to attack the UK Defence Academy using weapons capable of causing numerous deaths with national and international consequences, Assistant Chief Constable Rob Potts confirmed there was no proof Bashir understood the Heaton Park plans.
Apprehension and Deterrence Message
Bashir travelled to Pakistan following the synagogue attack but was apprehended at Manchester Airport upon his return. The Manchester-born individual, who also possesses a Pakistani passport, smiled toward family members seated in the upper public gallery as he departed from the dock following his sentencing.
