Central Madrid’s countryside has seen over 27,000 hectares consumed by fire, leaving residents facing comparable trials. Olga Congacha described the urgency to her husband and neighbors: “Everyone had to get out of the village quickly, it was a critical situation and people were scared.” The couple departed with minimal belongings—essential papers and a few garments.
In Castellón province, Ricardo Pozo told AFP he had “never seen a fire this intense before,” noting that while he had witnessed significant blazes on television, nothing compared to the reality unfolding before his eyes. Holiday Plans Upended

James Hillier, touring his son in Lacanau—roughly 42 kilometers east of Bordeaux—described ash descending from above. “The whole town got consumed by smoke,” he told the BBC. “There was ash falling from the sky and I noticed a big lump of it landed on my hand.” After relocating to Bordeaux where the air irritated eyes and prompted mask-wearing, the couple headed northward.
Sarah from Hertfordshire discovered her family’s seven-day Bordeaux vacation would end prematurely due to persistent smoke odors permeating their sealed apartment. Concerned for her sister-in-law Georgia, who planned to visit friends in Lacanau, Sarah advised against the trip. Georgia ultimately booked alternative accommodations but faces financial uncertainty since her original reservation was cancelled before flames reached the coastal town.
“If we don’t find a solution with them we currently stand to lose over £3,500,” Georgia explained regarding potential refund complications.
Both families eventually reached the Loire Valley over the weekend, visiting Chateau Villandry as they adjusted to the unexpected change in plans.
