The incident began on Sunday, 9 August, when a vehicle ignited on the A31 highway, prompting 23 motorists to leave their cars behind as flames spread rapidly.

Current Operations and Conditions

The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRS) reported that teams have established fire breaks and maintain “good hold of the perimeter of the fire,” with progress being made to implement fire breaks. Smoke, heat, ash, and the fire’s continued movement are preventing safe entry for repair crews. Teams remain on standby and will operate around the clock to reopen the highway as quickly as possible once conditions allow.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government has committed to ensuring adequate resources for fire services. A spokesperson noted that this includes making almost £1.95bn available for fire services in England, and investing nearly £100m in the biggest upgrade to national resilience in almost 20 years.
