Nasir initially planned to take a gap year following his A-levels and therefore did not apply to university. However, after receiving “great grades,” family and friends convinced him to pursue higher education. On results day, with assistance from his teachers, he completed a UCAS form and submitted applications to six universities through clearing before selecting Manchester to study politics and modern history.

The good thing about clearing is that you can apply to as many universities as you want, unlike with UCAS, where you are limited to five.

You will need a referee, which is why I’d suggest doing it now. Let’s say [you’ve] got to email the teacher, the teacher’s got to add a reference, then UCAS only gets sent once all of those parts are sent together.

Nasir wishes he had been better prepared and suggests creating notes covering location, accommodation costs, and other expenses for each institution you contact. He also stresses verifying eligibility before making phone calls.

Make sure you know whether you qualify before calling. With my university I was required to have a specific A-level, so make sure you meet the requirements.
