Ninoda.com – Great Britain’s Angharad Evans secured her maiden European Championship victory in the 100m breaststroke final held in Paris. The 23-year-old athlete crossed the finish line ahead of her competitors, setting a new championship record of one minute and 4.87 seconds. This performance also marked both a personal best and a British national record for the swimmer.

Evans had already established the championship record during the semi-final stage before ultimately claiming the gold medal. Ireland’s Mona McSharry finished in second place, while Italy’s Benedetta Pilato earned the bronze position.

Other Notable Performances at the Championships

Great Britain’s Filip Nowacki demonstrated strong form as the top qualifier in the semi-final of the 200m breaststroke event. The 18-year-old, who recently made history for Jersey by winning gold in the same event at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, recorded a time of 2:08.60. Nowacki edged out his British teammate Greg Butler, aged 25, in the opening semi-final, with both swimmers advancing to the final.

Amalie Smith contributed to Britain’s medal tally by earning silver in the 400m individual medley final. The 16-year-old finished just 0.7 seconds behind Ireland’s Ellen Walshe, who took the gold medal. Poland’s Justina Kozan secured the bronze position in this race.

Smith, who had already won gold earlier in the week during the 4x200m freestyle relay, also competed as part of the 4x100m freestyle relay squad that placed fifth overall.

World Record Broken in Backstroke

Italian teenager Sara Curtis delivered an outstanding performance by setting a new world record in the women’s 50m backstroke. The 19-year-old clocked an impressive time of 26.63 seconds during her semi-final heat. This achievement surpassed the previous world record established by Australia’s Kaylee McKeown three years prior, with Curtis improving upon it by 0.23 seconds.
