France Experiences Record-Breaking Heat Amid Widespread Power Disruptions
Power outages hit France as it records – France set a new temperature record on Wednesday, marking its hottest day since 1947, according to its national weather agency. This summer heatwave has intensified across western Europe, leading to early closures of tourist attractions and power outages affecting thousands of households. The heatwave, which has already claimed lives and disrupted daily life, is expected to persist with temperatures projected to rise further in the coming days.
Heatwave Intensifies Across Western Europe
As the mercury climbed, more than half of France remained under a red heat alert, with authorities reporting severe energy strain in the western regions. The national temperature index, which combines day and night readings from multiple sites, reached 30C, surpassing the previous day’s 29.8C. Meanwhile, the Netherlands issued an orange weather alert, signaling dangerous conditions in its southern and central areas, while the UK faced a rare red alert amid breaking June records.
“The building was not sufficiently adapted to climate change,” stated a Louvre spokesperson, highlighting the challenges faced by iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre, which closed early due to extreme heat.
Climate change is accelerating the warming trend in Europe, where temperatures are rising twice as fast as the global average. The Copernicus climate service notes this rapid increase, contributing to more frequent and intense heatwaves. Such events are placing additional stress on water resources and heightening the risk of wildfires, as seen in Maine-et-Loire, where over 150 firefighters tackled a major blaze in the Breignon forest.
Forecasts indicate temperatures could peak in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany by the weekend, with the heatwave spreading eastward to Poland, Croatia, and Hungary. While France anticipates a gradual cooling from Friday, the minister of labor, Jean-Pierre Farandou, warned, “France is in the process of finding out we’ve become a hot country,” urging societal adaptation to the changing climate.
Heat-Related Incidents and Water Restrictions
The heatwave has also caused fatalities, with at least 40 people drowning in France since last Thursday. In Germany, similar incidents were reported, including a 26-year-old man who died after entering the Danube near Regensburg. Authorities in Brandenburg, Hesse, and North Rhine-Westphalia are urging water conservation as drought concerns grow, per Die Welt. In Baden-Württemberg, cities like Stuttgart and Freiburg have implemented barbecue bans to mitigate fire risks.
Spain, which has endured relentless heat, recorded its highest June average temperatures since 1950. Tuesday’s 28.17C broke the previous 2025 record of 28.01C. Meanwhile, Italy added Latina to its list of red heat alert areas on Wednesday, with Bari expected to join the alerts on Thursday. These measures underscore the continent-wide impact of the escalating summer conditions.
