Another UK heatwave could be – Last week, extreme heat alerts were activated in England and Wales, marking a period of unusually high temperatures. However, recent readings show a decline from the record-breaking levels recorded earlier in the month. Despite this, meteorological signs suggest a potential return to elevated heat conditions as July begins.
Forecast models indicate temperatures in England and Wales may rise into the mid-30s Celsius by the following week. The Met Office has noted that the current weather is “warmer-than-average,” though predictions remain uncertain. “While a recurrence of heatwave conditions seems probable in certain regions, the chance of extreme heat or humidity levels similar to last week is still low,” explained deputy chief forecaster Tony Wisson.
Heat Records and European Trends
A new UK heat record for June was set at 37.7C (99.9F) in Lingwood, Norfolk, surpassing the previous benchmark of 35.6C from 1957 and matched in 1976. Across Europe, at least eight countries also recorded national temperature highs during the same period. Red extreme heat warnings persist in eastern Europe, where conditions are expected to remain severe.
“Although a return to heatwave conditions is looking increasingly likely for some areas, the likelihood of such extreme high temperatures or high levels of humidity as last week is currently low,” deputy chief forecaster Tony Wisson said.
High pressure systems are expected to shift from the south-west later this week, ushering in warmer conditions. July, the UK’s typical peak month for temperatures, now appears poised for above-average warmth. Earlier this month, the Met Office and BBC Weather’s data provider released a summer forecast predicting “an increased chance of heatwaves and heat-related impacts.”
Heatwave Impacts and Health Concerns
Health officials report over 1,300 excess deaths since June 21 linked to the recent heatwave. France accounted for nearly 1,000 of these, with hundreds of local records for June and all-time highs broken. The full toll may rise once data from all European nations is compiled.
As the high-pressure zone moves eastward, temperatures in western Europe and the UK will likely remain above average this week. However, the intensity of last week’s heat is expected to ease. Eastern Europe, meanwhile, may see gradual cooling as the heat dome shifts.

Forecasters use multiple weather models to track temperature variations, updating predictions twice daily. This provides a range of possibilities rather than a single outcome, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding specific heat spikes. Countries like the Czech Republic, Germany, and Poland all recorded their hottest days on record during the past week.
