Her career in public service spanned several decades, with a notable chapter as a minister in the government of Sir John Major. She also gained widespread recognition for her television appearances, including her role on the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing and her participation in Celebrity Big Brother.
A Political Journey and Public Persona
Widdecombe served as a Home Office and employment minister from 1994 to 1997, later transitioning to a role as a European Parliament member for the Brexit Party in 2019. Her advocacy for the UK’s exit from the EU was a defining aspect of her later career. In 2023, she joined Nigel Farage’s Reform UK, becoming a key voice on issues like immigration and justice.
“It is with great sadness that today we announce the death of The Right Honourable Ann Widdecombe, DSG,” stated her agents, Cloud 9 Management. “We send our deepest condolences to Ann’s family and friends.”
Following her passing, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage highlighted her impact, calling her a “decisive role” in securing Brexit. “When Ann Widdecombe decided to run for The Brexit Party in the 2019 European Elections, it was a pivotal moment and a significant boost,” he wrote on X. “The voters adored her, and she will be missed by all.”
Legacy and Values
Her agents noted that her life and career were “driven by strong Christian values and a dedication to public service.” Even after leaving Parliament 16 years ago, Widdecombe remained actively involved with Reform UK. Her 2018 appearance on Celebrity Big Brother further cemented her status as a media favorite.
“For many, she will be best (or worst?) remembered for her unforgettable performances on Strictly Come Dancing,” the statement added. “Week after week, audiences delighted in her missteps, especially as she struggled to keep pace with Anton Du Beke’s choreography.”
Throughout her tenure in Parliament, Widdecombe’s socially conservative views often sparked debate, particularly on issues such as abortion and LGBTQ+ rights. In 2019, she faced criticism for suggesting science might one day explain being gay. Despite this, her bold approach to political discourse remained a hallmark of her public presence.
Health Secretary James Murray reflected on her career, stating, “Ann was never hesitant to express firm opinions and share them openly.” While their views differed, he acknowledged her “tremendous contribution to politics and public life,” emphasizing her lasting influence on the political landscape.
