Man Arrested on Suspicion of Murder After Death of Ann Widdecombe

Man arrested on suspicion of murder – Devon and Cornwall Police have detained a 26-year-old white British man on suspicion of murder following the passing of Ann Widdecombe, a former Conservative government minister and Reform UK spokesperson. The suspect was apprehended at an address in Newton Abbot, Devon, on Friday and is currently in custody. His arrest comes after her body was discovered at her rural home in Haytor, Dartmoor, with severe injuries, reported by authorities around 11:40 BST on Thursday.

Investigation Unfolds

Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman addressed the situation at a press briefing on Friday, stating that the police have “no information to believe that this is a politically motivated crime.” He emphasized that the case remains under early investigation, and it is unclear if the suspect was known to Widdecombe. “It is too early to comment on whether the suspect had prior contact with her,” Longman noted, urging the public to share any relevant insights.

“This is an extremely tragic incident and our thoughts are very much with the family and friends of Ann Widdecombe at this difficult time,” said Det Ch Insp Ilona Rosson in an earlier statement.

Widdecombe’s Career and Public Life

Ann Widdecombe’s political journey spanned over three decades, during which she represented Maidstone, Kent, as a Member of Parliament for 23 years. She also held roles as a Home Office and employment minister in Sir John Major’s administration from 1994 to 1997. After retiring from politics, she transitioned to television, appearing on shows like Strictly Come Dancing in 2010 and Celebrity Big Brother in 2018. Widdecombe became an MEP for the Brexit Party in 2019, representing South West England, before joining Reform UK in 2023 as a spokesperson for immigration and justice.

Her most recent public appearance was on TalkTV on Wednesday, the day before her death. Anton Du Beke, her former dance partner on Strictly Come Dancing, expressed deep sorrow, saying the news “hasn’t sunk in yet.”

Community Response

Neighbors and local figures have shared their grief, with Susan Coish, Widdecombe’s adjacent resident, calling her a “lovely lady” and “character.” Coish was stunned by the incident, questioning the motive behind the attack. Meanwhile, police have expanded their presence in the area and are conducting door-to-door checks, as well as reviewing CCTV footage, to gather more details.

“We are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the vicinity of Haytor Vale or anyone with CCTV, doorbell or dashcam footage which could assist with our investigation,” Rosson added.

Widdecombe’s next of kin have been notified and are receiving support from specially trained officers. The prime minister and other leaders expressed shock, with Sir Keir Starmer describing the event as “really shocking” and Kemi Badenoch stating she was “stunned to hear this awful news.” Reform UK’s Nigel Farage called the nature of her death “deeply, deeply upsetting.”
