Iran Warns of Further Trade Disruptions Amid US Strikes
Iran threatens to block more trade – Iran’s state TV reported that its military forces executed separate strikes against American interests, following a warning from Tehran to disrupt additional trade corridors. The US military’s Central Command (Centcom) confirmed that it had launched drone, aerial, and naval assaults on Iranian military sites during the early hours of Wednesday, after a seven-hour operation the prior night.
The renewed hostilities highlight the critical role of the Strait of Hormuz in global commerce. Iranian Revolutionary Guards declared the strait would stay closed until the US halts its “aggressive actions,” signaling a potential threat to regional oil and gas exports. This move follows the US imposition of a new blockade on Iranian ports, which restricts vessel movement to and from coastal regions.
“I’ll save the energy targets for last, but ultimately we’ll hit energy targets,” said US President Donald Trump in an interview on Special Report with Bret Baier. His statement came after reversing a plan to impose a 20% toll on shipping through the strait, which he had threatened earlier.
Earlier, Trump had pledged to target Iran’s bridges and power plants if diplomatic talks resumed. The decision to abandon the toll came amid efforts to secure massive trade agreements with Gulf nations. However, the standoff has reignited concerns about the fragility of the US-Iran deal, which was recently negotiated as a memorandum of understanding.
Centcom officials noted that Wednesday’s strikes “further degraded Iran’s capacity to threaten commercial shipping in the strait,” targeting coastal defenses and missile facilities on Greater Tunb Island. The US allies also reported intercepting drones and missiles launched from Iran, underscoring the escalating tensions.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warned the US that it could “expect the closure of other oil and gas export routes serving U.S. and allied interests,” though it did not specify which channels were at risk. The situation has driven oil prices to surge as tanker traffic through the vital waterway nearly halts.
Strategic Implications of the Strait of Hormuz
The dispute over the strait has become a central issue in the ongoing conflict. Iran’s military actions in Jordan, Kuwait, and Bahrain indicate a broader strategy to challenge US influence in the region. Analysts note that the strait’s vulnerability exposes weaknesses in the current agreement, with both sides vying for control over critical supply lines.
