This marks yet another major Hollywood production to utilize Glasgow as a filming location in recent years.
Furthermore, Glasgow is anticipated to transform into Gotham City next month when production begins on the sequel to The Batman. Screen Scotland noted that the Victorian architecture, broad avenues, and grid layout make it an “incredibly versatile stand-in” for numerous American cities. Filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton expressed his admiration for Scotland as a filming destination during an interview at the premiere on Wednesday.
“I love Scotland,” he told Press Association. “I got to go to Scotland first ages ago with a short film to the Edinburgh Film Festival and I fell in love with that place.”
The 37-year-old director continued: “When we shot in Glasgow, that was our first day shooting and that was just such an energising way to start. We had thousands of people show up who are cheering us on and getting excited and feeling that energy which was really a wonderful way to start.”
When asked what would motivate him to return to Scotland, Cretton emphasized the local community. “The people in Glasgow, in particular, were so warm and welcoming and fun and knew how to party and have a good time. It was a really wonderful experience.”
Producer Amy Pascal echoed these sentiments, stating that “everything about Scotland is great” and emphasizing how “wonderful to make movies in the real places.” The film chronicles Parker’s journey as he adjusts to his new existence four years following the events of the previous movie, 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, which featured a magical spell designed to make the world forget his true identity so he could save the universe.
His romantic relationship with MJ (Zendaya) and his friendship with Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon) have similarly been erased from civilian memories, creating a solitary Peter who continues his crime-fighting activities in secret while his companions navigate university life. Glasgow’s streets serve as the visual backdrop throughout the movie, with local locations appearing in an early chase sequence.
Screen Scotland, the organization that supports Scotland’s film and television industry, commented: “It’s fantastic to see Spiderman: Brand New Day hitting our screens. As we can already see from the trailer, Glasgow has a starring role, as the city once again seamlessly doubles for New York.”
