Limiting sugar before age two linked to improved cognitive outcomes

The comprehensive study examined the effects of the conclusion of sugar rationing in the United Kingdom, which triggered a dramatic surge in daily sugar intake among the population. According to the findings, individuals who were toddlers when sugar rationing ended demonstrated a remarkable 23% reduction in dementia risk compared to their peers.
Understanding the historical context
This investigation builds upon previous research exploring what scientists call the “natural experiment” surrounding Britain’s post-World War Two recovery and the gradual elimination of food rationing. When sugar rationing officially ended in September 1953, daily sugar consumption reportedly jumped from approximately 41 grams per day—equivalent to ten sugar cubes—to roughly 80 grams or twenty cubes almost overnight. Earlier studies had already connected this sudden increase to higher rates of type 2 diabetes and elevated blood pressure in subsequent decades.
The most recent analysis focused on nearly 65,000 participants enrolled in the UK BioBank project. Researchers from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in Guangzhou, China, examined children who grew up on either side of the sugar rationing period. Their conclusions suggested that limiting sugar during the first two years of life was associated with both a 23% lower incidence of dementia and a diagnosis that occurred approximately two-and-a-half years later than average.
Expert perspectives and limitations
“Our findings suggest that limiting sugar during the earliest stages of life may have lasting benefits for brain health,” explained lead researcher Jiazhen Zheng. The results were published in the prestigious journal Neurology. Nevertheless, Zheng emphasized that additional investigation remains necessary to determine whether sugar consumption directly causes these neurological effects or if other factors are involved.
Rachel Richardson, methods support unit lead for evidence production and methods directorate at Cochrane, an independent non-profit network dedicated to gathering and summarizing medical research, offered cautious optimism. “They may be onto something,” Richardson noted, though she clarified that the findings “do not represent a smoking gun” establishing a definitive connection between early sugar intake and dementia. “This evidence relates to people born in the 1940s and 1950s and so its applicability to young children today is limited,” Richardson explained. She pointed out that weaning practices occurred earlier during that era, which would substantially influence the early nutrition of babies and children. Professor Ian Maidment, professor of clinical pharmacy at Aston University, described the research as “an interesting idea” that helps inform ongoing debate, but maintained that more evidence is required. He noted that connecting “something that happened 80 years ago” and projecting those findings onto contemporary health meant there were “loads” of other variables potentially playing a role.
Dr. Sara Rodrigues from Alzheimer’s Research UK added important context: “It’s important to remember that this was an observational study.” She emphasized that while such research can identify associations between diet and dementia risk, it cannot prove that eating less sugar directly prevents the condition. “Eating a healthy, balanced diet is one of the best ways to support your brain health and it’s never too late to make positive changes,” Rodrigues concluded.
