Scientists Identify Core Components of Avian Vocal Variety

Ninoda.com – Researchers in France have pinpointed the fundamental elements driving the immense range of bird songs worldwide. After reviewing approximately 116,000 audio recordings, the team concluded that global avian vocalizations consist of eight primary sound categories, termed motifs.

These foundational units encompass three varieties of trills, three whistle types, harmonies, and chaotic notes. According to the findings, every song heard globally is essentially a combination of these specific building blocks.

Global Analysis and AI Technology

Quentin Bacquelé, a PhD candidate at the University of Saint-Etienne, spearheaded the project. Leveraging artificial intelligence, the researchers analyzed a comprehensive database compiled by volunteers. This approach enabled the comparison of thousands of tracks originating from over 3,000 distinct bird species.

“The diversity is huge. And if you go to Asia, Africa, Amazonia, you will hear totally different songs.”

Environmental Influence on Song Structure

A crucial outcome of the study reveals that the habitat where birds evolved significantly impacts their vocal composition. Species inhabiting tropical regions employ different acoustic motifs than those found in temperate landscapes.

In dense, biodiverse tropical forests, simpler sounds such as flat whistles are prevalent. These basic motifs assist birds in being heard clearly through thick vegetation and a busy soundscape. Meanwhile, temperate forest birds frequently utilize more intricate arrangements, including ultrafast trills, which facilitate communication over shorter distances.

This dynamic illustrates an evolutionary compromise. Although highly complex songs deliver substantial information, they face challenges transmitting that data across long ranges within intricate environments.
