Meet the record-equalling keeper who helped Curacao make history
Meet the record equalling keeper who helped – In a remarkable turn of events, Curacao secured their maiden World Cup point after a thrilling encounter with Ecuador. The match, which saw an astonishing 15 saves from goalkeeper Eloy Room, became a defining moment for the island nation. Despite an early chance from Ecuador’s Enner Valencia, who raced onto goal within the first three minutes, Room’s timely intervention changed the course of the game.
The 37-year-old Miami FC stopper has now matched a World Cup record set in 1966, with no goalkeeper previously managing more than 15 saves in a 90-minute match. While Tim Howard once equaled this feat in a single game, he couldn’t prevent a loss for the USA in 2014. Room, however, left no room for error, keeping Ecuador from scoring despite an expected goals tally of 3.05.
Curacao’s qualification story
Room’s contributions also played a pivotal role in Curacao’s World Cup journey. The team had previously earned a dramatic 0-0 draw with Jamaica in November, which secured their spot in the tournament. That result, coupled with his performance in the opening game against Germany, where they equalized but ultimately lost 7-1, set the stage for their historic draw with Ecuador.
The Dutch-born keeper, who is also the oldest player in Curacao’s squad, was lured to the team by former striker Patrick Kluivert in 2015. Kluivert, who once managed the Blue Wave, convinced Room to play for the country of his father’s heritage. This decision proved transformative, as Room became a cornerstone of Curacao’s campaign.
From Eredivisie to World Cup glory
Before joining Miami FC, Room enjoyed a decade-long stint in the Netherlands, featuring in over 200 Eredivisie matches. His career included a league title with PSV and a cup win with Vitesse. After moving to the USA in 2019, he claimed the MLS Cup with Columbus Crew and earned a prestigious save-of-the-season accolade. Though he briefly returned to Europe, his path eventually led him back to Miami FC in the second-tier league.
Room’s dedication to the sport extends beyond the pitch. He’s a passionate padel player, believing the sport sharpens his reflexes. While his record-breaking 15 saves in the World Cup match stood out, it was a 4-3 win over Louisville City where he made just five stops that highlighted his versatility. That game, played in front of a modest crowd at Pitbull Stadium, contrasted sharply with the grand stage of Kansas City Stadium, where his heroics were celebrated by 68,598 fans.
“Take a bow, Room,” said BBC Sport pundit Martin Keown. “Absolutely magnificent. You were almost getting a calculator out at the end of the game to count them up. It just became a shopping list of saves. His reactions were first class.”
Reflecting on the match, Room expressed his awe at the achievement. “I still have to process myself,” he said. “The match is full of emotions. I knew it was going to be a tough game. The first save set the tone, not just for me but for the whole team. It gave me confidence, and we all grew together. Earning a point this way for Curacao is absolutely great.”
