Major Explosion at Essex Farm Sends Firefighters to Hospital

“This was one of the most challenging and complex incidents Essex County Fire and Rescue Service has responded to in recent years,” Hylton stated.

Emergency calls arrived at approximately 16:50 BST on Friday regarding flames affecting industrial premises and adjacent land on Southend Road, positioned between East Hanningfield and Rettendon. According to Hylton, crews encountered a substantial fire that was “quickly developing” upon arrival.
At 17:46, a building containing fertiliser experienced a violent explosion. Local observers relayed to the BBC that the sound resembled “a bomb” or “sonic boom.” Additional witnesses reported seeing hot fragments descending from above.
Medical Updates and Ongoing Operations
Regarding those hospitalized, four sustained minor wounds while sixteen underwent precautionary examinations for potential complications including hearing impairment. Hylton confirmed every affected firefighter had been released from medical care.
By Saturday, roughly twenty-five personnel continued dampening operations at the location. Recovery efforts for impacted commercial enterprises are also proceeding, alongside an active investigation into what triggered the fire.
