Scientists Create the World’s Most Eco-Friendly Party Balloon

A Greener Alternative
Co-inventor Juliana Cumming, aged 29, explained the manufacturing differences between standard products and their creation. She noted that traditional strengthening methods prevent complete decomposition.
“Regular balloons are treated with a process to make them strong and stretchy,” said 29-year-old co-inventor Juliana Cumming, a PhD researcher at Imperial. “But that process also stops them fully degrading and causes toxic chemicals to leach into the environment.”
Standard balloons utilize sulphur vulcanization with various accelerators and heavy metal salts that pollute ecosystems. In contrast, the new design avoids these harmful substances.
“For our balloon, however, we use a process that joins the biodegradable materials together without any additives, so it’s able to break down fully.”
Protecting Marine Life
Party planner Charlotte Melia provided funding for the project after noticing the environmental toll of balloon arches. She recalled an event where she was overwhelmed by discarded balloons.
“We’d just hosted a large event and I was surrounded by thousands of popped balloons,” she said. “That was the straw that broke the camel’s back. I wanted to take action.”
Recent studies indicate balloon pieces are significantly more lethal to seabirds than hard plastic debris. Melia pointed out that even products marketed as fully biodegradable often fail to decompose completely. Campaigners have long urged bans on balloon releases due to the danger posed when materials fall back to earth.
Commercial Availability and Beyond
The Bioloon product matches the cost of regular balloons while being simpler to inflate. Scientists predict it will hit the market within two years. Melia envisions extending this technology to other latex products.
“We hope to start working on gloves, surgical and non-surgical latex, medicinal apparatus, clothing, and even condoms in the future.”
