Speeding Jet Skiers with Children on Board ‘Remove Plates to Evade Cameras’
Speeding jet skiers with children on board – According to a recent report, some jet skiers are regularly exceeding the speed limit by as much as four times, often while transporting children. Conwy council has installed CCTV cameras in the area to monitor and capture these incidents, but challenges remain as riders have been removing their registration plates to avoid being identified for prosecution.
Harbour Master Highlights Risks
Harbour Master Matt Forbes emphasized that the issue involves a “minority of riders” who are endangering others by violating the 10-knot (11.5 mph) speed limit. During a recent meeting, he noted multiple instances of hazardous behavior in the region over the past several months.
“Speeding up to 30 or 40 knots with young children on board is particularly concerning, as it often occurs in the narrowest part of the channel between Deganwy and the beacons,” Forbes stated.
The council had previously placed clear warning signs at the Beacons slipway and the entrances to Conwy and Delaney Marinas. Additionally, two yellow special marks were introduced to indicate the speed restrictions. However, these measures have not fully prevented riders from evading detection.
CCTV Efforts and Evidence Challenges
Forbes explained that the CCTV team works to record incidents in real time, aiming to gather evidence when violations occur. Yet, the process is complicated by the need to recover the vehicle before prosecution can proceed.
“We’ve been working with the CCTV staff to capture it live, so when we are aware something is happening to film it,” Forbes said. “What we don’t want to do is bring one in and it be unsuccessful.”
He also noted that the removal of registration plates suggests riders are aware of the cameras, indicating a deliberate attempt to avoid accountability. In response, the council has upgraded the harbor’s signage to ensure the speed limits are “very clear” and has conducted water patrols over recent weekends, reporting no behavioral concerns during those periods.
