Ex-Healthcare Worker Faces Cautions Over Sale of Princess’s Medical Records
Ex health worker tried to sell – In March 2024, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) issued a caution to a former healthcare employee for attempting to acquire and sell Catherine, Princess of Wales’ medical records. The investigation was triggered by a report that a staff member at the London Clinic had accessed the princess’s confidential notes during her stay for abdominal surgery in January of that year.
The ICO noted that the caution was deemed “proportionate” and aligned with legal standards for handling sensitive data. The watchdog highlighted the deliberate exploitation of personal information and the intent to sell it for financial benefit. However, they clarified that no broader systemic issues were uncovered in the hospital’s operations related to this incident.
“We are pleased our collaboration with the ICO has resolved this unfortunate event,” said a representative from the London Clinic. “There were no breaches of regulatory standards during the princess’s care.”
The London Clinic, a private facility near Regent’s Park, is the UK’s largest independent hospital and has served as a regular site for royal medical appointments. Catherine underwent abdominal surgery there in January 2024 and temporarily paused her public responsibilities for recovery. By March, she disclosed her ongoing cancer treatment, which she later confirmed had entered remission in early 2025.
As of late 2024, the princess began rejoining public activities, with a notable appearance at the Order of the Garter ceremony in May. This marked her return to high-profile events following a year of treatment, during which she had missed similar gatherings. Ian Hulme, the ICO’s executive director for regulatory oversight, emphasized the importance of safeguarding patient data: “Individuals deserve confidence that their information is secure in healthcare environments. When this trust is compromised, legal action is justified.”
Princess’s Health Journey and Public Reengagement
Catherine’s medical records were accessed during her January 2024 visit for abdominal surgery. After a period of recovery, she announced her diagnosis of cancer in March and shared her treatment progress. By early 2025, she confirmed remission and gradually resumed her royal duties. Her recent public engagement, including a lighthearted interaction with other members of the royal family at the Order of the Garter service, underscored her return to active participation in official events.
