Man Convicted of Killing Partner and Destroying Home with Explosion Receives Life Sentence
The Crime and Its Aftermath
Man who murdered partner and blew – A 45-year-old man, Clifton George, has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 23 years after murdering his partner, Annabel Rook, and setting fire to their London home. The incident occurred on 17 June 2025, when Rook, a 46-year-old mother of two, was found dead in the family residence in Stoke Newington. The blaze, caused by a gas canister explosion, caused approximately £400,000 in damages.
George admitted to manslaughter and arson but claimed he had lost control during the attack. According to court testimony, he attacked Rook with punches and attempts to choke her before stabbing her 31 times. The violence escalated after she sought to end their 10-year relationship.
Trial and Conviction
The trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court revealed George’s volatile nature, with evidence showing he was an aggressive and bullying partner prone to explosive outbursts over minor issues. The judge noted that while George could be amiable and humorous, he also exhibited a “troubling side” marked by rage and impatience.
“She was a truly wonderful woman, one of the world’s life enhancers,” said Peter Rook, Annabel’s father, describing her as a devoted mother, loving daughter, and cherished friend. “She lived 46 altruistic years, giving so much to so many.”
George’s defense argued he was not inherently short-tempered, but friends and family painted a different picture. Sian Davin, Rook’s best friend, testified that George often displayed “unreasonable flashing rage,” fat-shamed her, and used manipulative tactics to provoke emotional reactions. The court also heard about an incident at the Glastonbury Festival in 2024, where George stormed out after an argument with Rook’s friend and lashed out drunkenly at his partner.
Family’s Emotional Response
Rook’s mother, Susanna, described George as “a wicked, totally narcissistic, damaged person” during the victim impact statement. She shared her grief, saying, “We will never be able to come to terms with her death. Life without her is painful and hard to bear.” Her sister Sophie echoed this, stating, “Without Annabel, there is less joy and less hope.”
“I fear there will be some more wrath to come,” Annabel’s voice was heard in a voice note played during the trial, where she also predicted, “We will get through this and be stronger for it out the other side.”
George was discovered on the kitchen floor, bloodied and clutching a shard of broken glass, after the explosion. He admitted to losing control before the attack but tried to commit suicide, according to the court. Prosecutors suggested the fire was meant to erase evidence of the murder, though George maintained it was an accident.
Relationship Strains and Final Days
Rook had confided in her father about George’s short temper as early as 2023, calling their dynamic “like walking on eggshells.” By summer 2024, she had acknowledged the relationship’s abusive nature, leaving a message for her sister shortly before her death that it was “not tenable.” Despite her efforts to reconcile, she had planned to provide George with £50,000 to secure a new home and hoped they might continue traveling together.
Friends and family highlighted George’s recurring outbursts, including a past episode where he exploded in anger after Rook washed his chef’s knives and left them to drip-dry. These incidents contributed to the court’s decision to convict him of murder, emphasizing his capacity for violence and the impact of his actions on Rook’s life.
