Boy, 8, helps save grandad after capsized kayak drifts two miles off coast

Boy 8 helps save grandad after – On 27 May, an 8-year-old boy demonstrated remarkable bravery by aiding his grandfather in a harrowing sea rescue. The pair, Marley and his grandad David “Dai” Jones, from Mountain Ash, Rhondda Cynon Taf, were kayaking off Fontygary in the Vale of Glamorgan when their vessel overturned, leaving them stranded in the water. Dai managed to get Marley back on board, but he was unable to reboard himself, forcing him to remain in the ocean while the kayak drifted away. The strong currents of the Bristol Channel carried them approximately two-and-a-half miles in about 25 minutes, from Fontygary Steps to near the Cason by Aberthaw.

Heroic Actions Amidst the Drift

Marley, despite the perilous situation, stayed composed and used a waterproof phone pouch to call his nan onshore. She immediately alerted emergency services, prompting the launch of Barry Dock RNLI’s inshore lifeboat toward Limpet Bay. “I was growing increasingly tired and cold, and there was a point where I wasn’t sure I’d make it,” Dai admitted. “But I was trying to stay positive and keep calm for Marley because I didn’t want him to be frightened.” The arrival of the lifeboat brought immense relief to the pair, who were eventually safely retrieved, along with their kayak.

“I was really happy when the lifeboat arrived—I thought PHEW!” Marley said. “When I called my nan, I told her I was okay, but granscha looked like he was drowning and we needed help.”

Both individuals were wearing life jackets throughout the ordeal, which contributed to their survival. The RNLI highlighted that sea temperatures in the Vale of Glamorgan were around 11C to 12C, despite the warm and sunny weather. Days later, Dai, Marley, and Marley’s father, Joe, visited Barry Dock RNLI Lifeboat Station to commemorate the event. There, Marley received a special medal in recognition of his calmness, courage, and maturity during the incident.

Recognition of Calm and Composure

Andy, the helm of the inshore lifeboat, praised the boy’s actions. “Marley and Dai did exactly the right things by staying with the kayak and calling for help,” he said. “I’d particularly like to commend Marley for his incredible calm throughout the event. In what must have been a frightening situation, he showed real maturity and stayed level-headed.” The crew also expressed appreciation for the opportunity to interact with the rescued individuals. “Meeting everybody at the lifeboat station meant a lot to both of us,” Dai noted. “Marley was so proud to receive his medal, and we’ll never forget it.”

“The crew were absolutely brilliant and looked after both of us from start to finish,” Dai said. “To be honest, I genuinely don’t think I’d be here today without them. Meeting the crew afterwards and being able to thank them in person was a meaningful experience.”
