Former DUP leader Donaldson sentenced to 15 years
Ninoda.com – Former DUP leader Donaldson sentenced to 15 years in prison after being convicted of child sex offences, including rape, against two women who were children at the time. Jeffrey Donaldson, 63, was sentenced at Newry Crown Court and will remain on the Sex Offenders Register for life.
The former Democratic Unionist Party leader and ex-Lagan Valley MP was convicted in June on 18 charges. He has been held at Maghaberry Prison since his conviction and returned there following the sentencing hearing. Donaldson is seeking to appeal the convictions.
Judge Paul Ramsey imposed an 11-year term for offences involving Victim B and a further four-year term for offences involving Victim A. The sentences will run consecutively, resulting in a total prison term of 15 years.
Judge cites seriousness and lasting harm
During the hearing, Judge Ramsey described the case as a “catastrophic descent into disgrace”. He said the prolonged nature of the offending, the victims’ young ages and the substantial age gap between Donaldson and the victims were aggravating factors.
The judge said Donaldson’s lack of previous convictions could not reduce the sentence. He also noted that a reduction in sentence may be available to defendants who plead guilty, but no such credit applied because Donaldson denied the allegations and contested the case.
“It is highly significant that the defendant denied the offences to the police, he denied them in evidence and to the probation officer he continues to maintain his denials,” Judge Ramsey said.
“He has doubled-down in his denials. There has not been, and doubtless will not be, one word of regret, apology or shame from this man to at least provide his victims with some crumb of comfort.”
The sentencing concludes this stage of the criminal case, although Donaldson’s appeal application means further court proceedings may follow. Former DUP leader Donaldson sentenced in Newry has drawn renewed attention to the profound and long-term impact of child sexual abuse.
Victims describe the impact of abuse
Statements from both victims were released after the hearing and read by Detective Chief Inspector Leah Crothers of the Police Service of Northern Ireland. Victim A described years of shame, anger, guilt and uncertainty, saying the effects of the abuse continued long after it ended.
“The conviction does not erase the abuse or undo the impact of what happened to me, and I will always carry the consequences of it,” Victim A said.
“But those responsible do not control me now. They forever changed me, but they will not take my future. The cycle is being broken and it ends with me.”
Victim B said the abuse had affected every part of her life since childhood. Her statement referred to fear at night, nightmares, waking while shaking and the difficulty of trusting other people.
“Nothing can ever change what was done to me. I wish it could,” Victim B said.
“I stood up, many years later, because for me this is about drawing a line in the sand and knowing that the Donaldsons can no longer hurt anyone else.”
Detective Chief Inspector Crothers said both women had suffered deeply while confronting what had happened to them. She praised the investigation that resulted in the case against Donaldson and his wife.
Proceedings involving Eleanor Donaldson
Donaldson’s wife, Eleanor Donaldson, remains involved in separate legal proceedings. A trial of the facts was held on mental health grounds, requiring jurors to decide whether she had carried out the alleged acts rather than determine criminal guilt in the usual way.
The jury found that she had committed the acts linked to five charges, including four allegations of aiding and abetting her husband’s offending. She has applied to appeal that verdict.
