A particularly intense fire near Stourbridge Golf Course consumed approximately 40 acres of terrain, including dense woodland and dry grass. Jane Baxter, a local resident evacuated from her Norton Road property, recalled first detecting smoke around 13:15 BST. She described the situation as becoming “horrendous” with flames clearly visible above neighboring rooftops.

Police instructed homeowners adjacent to the golf course to evacuate, advising them to wet their fences and prepare for potential departure. Dave Edwards, one of those residents, confirmed the evacuation orders were given as the fire intensified.

Beyond Stourbridge, the region experienced numerous fire incidents. Stoke-on-Trent saw four homes completely destroyed in the Goldenhill area, with one resident describing the properties as “completely gone.” In Castle Vale, Birmingham, a woman sustained serious injuries during a separate blaze. Meanwhile, Warwickshire declared a major incident following a significant fire in Salford Priors, Stratford-upon-Avon.

Worcestershire also reported substantial impacts, with Pershore experiencing a large fire at Lancelott Court that damaged multiple homes and forced 30 residents to leave their properties. Approximately 200 households lost electrical power in that area, and one individual received treatment for smoke inhalation.

Druids Heath in Birmingham experienced another substantial fire off Hillmeads Road on the same day. By 21:00 Thursday, the Warwickshire major incident had been stood down, though emergency crews remained on location.

Human Impact and Official Response

The fires resulted in several hospitalizations across the region. A child and three firefighters were transported to medical facilities, while ambulance services treated six individuals at the Stourbridge scene, with two requiring hospital admission.

West Midlands Fire Service chief Simon Tuhill characterized the events as “one of the most significant” incidents the organization has managed. He noted that fire control teams processed thousands of emergency calls throughout the day, with extensive devastation reported across multiple locations.

“My thoughts are with everyone affected, particularly those who have been injured or forced from their homes, and with the firefighters who have been taken to hospital.”

Prime Minister Andy Burnham expressed his condolences, describing the situation as “awful” to witness. He praised the emergency responders and confirmed he was coordinating with local leadership, including West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker.

Travelers faced significant delays as smoke from several fires forced the closure of the M6 northbound carriageway between junctions five and six, creating disruptions lasting more than two hours. Severn Trent Water also issued warnings regarding potential water supply interruptions throughout the West Midlands region due to the ongoing emergency response efforts.
