Tragedy in Bédar: A Couple’s Loss

The village of Bédar, a focal point of the disaster, mourned the deaths of Pete and Fran Gillam, a British couple who lived there. Their family confirmed the tragedy via a Facebook post, stating,

“We are heartbroken to share that we have received confirmation from the police that Mum and Dad did not survive the fire.”

The couple’s home was among the many destroyed in the area.

Survivor Shares Terrifying Experience

Malcolm Timbrell, a 70-year-old British resident of Bédar, recounted how he narrowly escaped the flames. Speaking to the BBC outside his ruined home on a hillside, he described fleeing from his family and friends. “Of the six cars, four instantly combusted,” he explained. “As each one started to go, I moved back one car. For some reason of fate, the last two cars survived, though they were badly singed and burnt.”

Heatwaves Fuel Deadly Fires

Spain has faced relentless heatwaves in recent years, with temperatures often surpassing 40°C. The current fire, which has been brought under control, scorched approximately 7,000 hectares (17,300 acres) of land. Nearly 1,500 residents were evacuated as emergency crews fought to contain the blazes.
