Shopworker Dismissed After Confronting Bacon Thief

Shopworker sacked for tackling suspected bacon – Eileen Fox, a 56-year-old retail employee, claims she was unfairly dismissed for confronting a suspected shoplifter at a Merseyside convenience store. She described the action as a necessary response to the woman’s alleged theft, which occurred on 27 April. Fox said she grabbed the shoplifter’s coat sleeve during the incident, prompting the suspect to collide with a metal stand before fleeing the One Stop Shop on Randall Drive, Bootle.

One Stop, the store’s operator, stated it expects staff to follow safety protocols during thefts and provides training on appropriate responses. A written dismissal letter, issued on 12 May, cited Fox’s actions as putting the business at risk. The letter claims she “followed” the suspect and “grabbed her and slammed her into a metal stand,” but Fox insists she did not pursue the woman, instead stepping in to stop her from leaving with stolen goods.

“Very Harsh” Decision Sparks Dispute

“I think what they’ve done is very harsh—it’s very upsetting,” Fox told the BBC. “They could have given me a final written warning. The union rep suggested that, but they said I would repeat the behavior, which I wouldn’t.”

Fox emphasized she acted on instinct during the quick incident and had never engaged in such behavior before. She added that the company exaggerated her actions in the letter, which she now says could be used to support legal action. The retail worker, still unemployed since joining One Stop in September 2022, is seeking advice on whether to pursue the matter further.

Staff Unease After Recent Robbery

Fox acknowledged breaching company policy but argued that the situation was influenced by recent staff concerns. A robbery the previous week by a man who frequently caused trouble had left employees uneasy. “Although I wasn’t involved, I was quite upset about it,” she said. “This was a regular shoplifter who escalated their behavior and even got behind the counter.”

The incident was reported to Merseyside Police by the store’s duty manager. Fox was suspended the day after the event and later summoned to an investigatory meeting with senior staff. The company defended its decision, stating it prioritizes safety and collaborates closely with police to prevent thefts. A spokesperson added: “We invest in security measures and train employees to handle incidents effectively.”
