His victory came in 44.17 seconds, with French athlete Muhammad Abdallah Kounta crossing the line second in 44.40. The win marked Hudson-Smith’s third European 400m championship title and brought his total medal count at the event to eight.

“Honestly, words can’t describe how much that meant to me,” he told BBC Sport. “Nobody was going to beat me on this track. This is my home. I know this track like the back of my hand. I have my stand. Now I’m going to go for Mayor of Birmingham and Wolverhampton!”

From Silver to Supremacy

Hudson-Smith’s path to this moment included both heartbreak and redemption. He narrowly missed consecutive world titles, finishing with silver medals at both the 2023 World Championships and the Paris 2024 Olympics. Those results followed what he described as three years of “absolute hell,” during which he had previously won world bronze in 2022.

His European Championship journey began twelve years ago when he claimed 400m silver on his debut in 2014. Since then, he has collected only gold in his individual event at this level, adding two 4x400m relay victories to his collection.

With this latest triumph, Hudson-Smith joined British legends Mo Farah and Roger Black with five gold medals each. He also matched Dina Asher-Smith as the most decorated British athlete in the history of the European Championships.

Birmingham Celebrates

The victory represented Great Britain’s third gold of the championships. Shortly after Hudson-Smith’s win, Emily Newnham added the host nation’s sixth medal with silver in the women’s 400m hurdles final.
