Guehi a doubt for Norway game and Rice ill with bug

Injury Concerns for England’s World Cup Clash with Norway

Guehi a doubt for Norway game – England’s defender Marc Guehi faces uncertainty ahead of Saturday’s World Cup quarter-final against Norway. The Manchester City player will undergo assessment on Friday to determine if he can participate in the match following a hamstring strain sustained after the 3-2 win over Mexico in the last 16. While initial hopes were that Guehi’s condition was muscular fatigue, medical staff now believe it requires closer monitoring.

Meanwhile, midfielder Declan Rice has been sidelined due to a sickness bug, missing a second consecutive training session. Rice, who already dealt with a neural issue affecting his hamstring and lower back, is experiencing exacerbated symptoms from the illness. England’s coaching staff has taken precautions to limit the spread of the bug within the squad.

Rice’s Fitness and Tactical Adjustments

Tuchel’s team is cautious about fitness risks, especially with Norway’s Erling Haaland posing a significant threat. If Guehi cannot join the squad on Friday, it could complicate defensive plans. However, the situation is not deemed critical. Right-back Reece James, who missed training earlier in the tournament, has returned to full sessions and is now in the running for Saturday’s lineup. His recovery adds optimism to Tuchel’s preparations.

James’s return is particularly timely, as injuries and suspensions have left England with limited options at the right-back position. Jarell Quansah, who was banned for two games after receiving a red card against Mexico, has further reduced the squad’s depth. Newcastle’s Tino Livramento, who injured his calf before the tournament, is still out, while Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah has stepped in as a central defender. However, Chalobah can also play at full-back, offering flexibility.

“With the heat and everything and having to change positions, going to right wing-back with a man down, it’s not easy,” said Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa, who covered right-back during the Mexico victory. “You have to tuck in and then, when the ball gets switched, you’ve got to run out and try and stop crosses. And I think the first 10 minutes mentally was tough because I was feeling it a little bit, but I had to find a switch and overcome it.”

Konsa also highlighted the support from John Stones, who “kept pushing me” during the match. The defender noted Stones even requested a position swap, though Konsa insisted, “No, don’t worry, it’s fine.” His adaptability was crucial in helping England secure the win.

Team Depth and Strategic Challenges

Despite the challenges, England retains several options at center-back, including John Stones, Dan Burn, and Chalobah. The squad’s ability to adjust remains a key factor as Tuchel prepares for Norway. The manager emphasized the need for defensive stability, given the high-scoring nature of the game and Haaland’s menace.

Quansah’s suspension means Djed Spence could be the sole natural right-back available if James or Guehi is unable to play. However, Konsa’s performance has shown the team’s resilience in overcoming positional shifts. With the World Cup knockout stage approaching, England’s depth and adaptability will be tested in their quest to advance.
