The village of Qusra, situated near Nablus, has become the focal point of escalating tensions. Israeli security forces reportedly pulled back from the Jewish settler outpost on Wednesday following violent encounters with a gathering of extremist settlers. Approximately twelve settlers continue to occupy the site.

Initial Response and Isolation

When the Palestinian homeowners first contacted the Israeli army, arriving soldiers were captured on video praying alongside the settlers rather than intervening. This initial response set the tone for days of inaction.

Security camera footage from the Abu Ridi family’s residence shows settlers dismantling a wall outside their home on Sunday evening. They piled the stones across the road, trapping seven individuals—including two young girls—inside their property. Other Palestinians in the area found themselves unable to reach the besieged families.

Both families reside in Area B, a zone under Palestinian administrative authority but Israeli security control. Qusay Abu Ridi described the circumstances as critical on Facebook, emphasizing their complete isolation. He stated that they remain in their own home on their own land, seeking nothing beyond the right to live with dignity and safety.

Escalating Tensions and Blocked Access

Aysha Hassan recounted to Reuters how settlers attempted to force open their gate while hurling stones and shouting insults. Her family, she explained, lives in constant fear and terror.

On Monday, Israeli journalists from the left-leaning Haaretz newspaper were prevented from reaching the Palestinian properties. The reporters noted that soldiers at the scene declined to assist when their vehicle became stuck for two hours. Although the area was declared a closed military zone, the restriction was not applied to the settlers.

The Abu Ridi and Hassan families have taken to social media to plead for assistance. Their water and electricity have been severed, and food reserves are running dangerously low. While the settlers’ precise objectives remain unclear, past actions have included forcing Palestinians from their homes and seizing property. The current stated goal is to remove all Palestinian residents from the area.

International and Military Response

These events unfold as a senior United Nations official warned the Security Council in New York on Tuesday that the West Bank has reached a critical threshold. Under international law, all settlements are considered illegal, and outposts established without official Israeli authorization are particularly contentious.

On Monday, the Israeli human rights organization Yesh Din issued an urgent appeal to the head of the Israeli military’s Central Command. They requested that the army protect the besieged residents, remove the settlers’ outpost, and ensure accountability for those involved.

By Tuesday evening, a Palestinian ambulance finally gained access to deliver food and transport one child for medical treatment. Shortly afterward, the Israel Defense Forces released a statement denouncing the new outpost’s establishment. The military characterized entering and seizing Palestinian homes as illegal, reprehensible, and unacceptable behavior.

Confrontations and Ongoing Crisis

Early Wednesday, Maj Gen Avi Bluth, head of the Central Command, arrived with other senior officers. They met with residents and expressed serious concern about the situation. Palestinian security camera video shared with the BBC captured subsequent confrontations between Israeli soldiers, border police, and a large crowd of settlers. Security forces deployed tear gas and stun grenades during the clashes.

Additional footage revealed that Israeli forces confiscated the canopy sheltering the settlers while leaving other equipment behind. The IDF stated that border police were evacuating the tent and working to remove civilians staying there. The military confirmed that disciplinary measures would be taken against security personnel documented at the site in recent days.

Abdel Azim Wadi, the Palestinian village mayor, told the BBC that locals have observed a consistent pattern of targeting Qusra. Last month, a newly constructed mosque was set ablaze, with Hebrew graffiti sprayed nearby. That settler attack represented one of numerous incidents following an earlier escalation.
