Controversy Over Dunblane Tragedy’s Description Sparks Backlash
Restore Britain leader describes Dunblane tragedy – Rupert Lowe, the MP for Great Yarmouth, recently sparked outrage after referring to the 1996 Dunblane school shooting as “one murder.” This remark came during his appearance on the Joe Rogan podcast, where he was critiquing the UK’s handgun ban. Rogan pointed out that the ban was implemented following the tragic event, and Lowe reiterated his stance, calling it “one murder.” The comment has since drawn sharp criticism from survivors and political figures.
A Devastating Day in Scottish History
On 13 March 1996, Thomas Hamilton entered Dunblane Primary School and killed 16 children and their teacher, Gwen Mayor, in a matter of minutes. He used four legally owned handguns and 743 rounds of ammunition, injuring 12 additional children and three adults. All but two of the victims were aged five or six. The attack, which lasted less than four minutes, ended when Hamilton turned the gun on himself.
“They don’t realise how devastating it was. But now we have a safer society because there is no longer private gun ownership,” said Kenny Ross, whose daughter Joanna was among the slain. Ross added, “Thirty years have passed and people forget what we had to go through. I wouldn’t want anyone else to go through that. It’s people like him that are very ignorant and selfish.”
Political Reactions to the Remarks
Conservative MSP Stephen Kerr condemned Lowe’s description as “astonishingly insensitive and profoundly disrespectful to the victims.” He argued that reducing the massacre to “one murder” not only misrepresents the event but also overlooks its profound impact on Scotland. “That tragedy changed Scotland forever,” Kerr said, “and to speak so casually about an event that still causes such pain is both callous and indefensible.”
Local MSP Keith Brown called Lowe’s comments “beyond despicable,” emphasizing that the Dunblane victims’ families and community drove the Snowdrop Campaign. This movement pushed for some of the UK’s strictest firearms laws, including a ban on private handgun ownership. Brown noted, “Despite these hideous remarks, the campaign ensured a lasting legacy of safety.”
Rupert Lowe’s Political Journey
Lowe established the Restore Britain party as a “political movement” following his suspension from Reform UK in March 2023. His removal was linked to allegations of threatening physical violence against the party’s former chairman, Zia Yusuf. The Crown Prosecution Service later stated there was not enough evidence to pursue a conviction. Now, as the leader of Restore Britain, Lowe faces scrutiny over his remarks about the Dunblane tragedy.
While Lowe maintains the ban was a response to “one incident,” critics argue that the phrase minimizes the scale of the disaster. The shooting remains one of the UK’s worst gun-related tragedies, forever altering public perception of gun control and child safety.
