UK Records New June Heatwave Peak as 36.1C Sparks Warnings
UK sees hottest June day on record – The UK’s highest June temperature ever was recorded in Gosport, Hampshire, on Wednesday, reaching 36.1C (97F). This surge broke the prior record of 35.6C, set in Southampton in 1976 and Camden in 1957, according to the Met Office, which labeled the measurement “provisional” pending verification.
Heatwave Effects Across the Nation
With the extreme heat warning active in parts of southern and central England, as well as south Wales, temperatures are expected to climb further. The Met Office predicts a potential high of 38C by Friday, affecting regions such as the East Midlands, London, and the West Midlands. Schools and transport systems faced significant disruption, with train services advising passengers to prioritize essential trips and reduced timetables in place.
“No let up” – The people working in extreme heat
Meanwhile, Wales experienced its warmest day of the year, with 33.3C recorded at Cardiff Bute Park. Southern England saw additional spikes, including 36C in Wisley, Surrey, and 35.9C in Wiggonholt, West Sussex. The “feels like” temperature, accounting for humidity, is anticipated to surpass 40C in several areas, prompting concerns over public health.
Climate Change and Warnings for the Future
Professor Stephen Belcher, Met Office’s chief scientist, highlighted that climate change has intensified heatwaves, making record-breaking temperatures more frequent. The current heatwave is notable for its “exceptional spell of hot and humid weather,” with potential for widespread health impacts. This marks only the second red extreme heat warning since the system began in 2021.
A broader amber warning extends across England and Wales through Thursday, with some regions north of Manchester forecasted to hit over 30C. Additional amber alerts cover south-east England and parts of the Midlands for Friday and Saturday, respectively. These warnings emphasize the growing need for adaptive measures during prolonged heat events.
Heatwave Challenges and Public Response
Amid the heat, a major search operation was launched in Hampshire after a 15-year-old boy disappeared while swimming in a nature reserve. Meanwhile, traffic jams on the M25 near Surrey saw stranded individuals treated for heat-related illnesses. King Charles III recently received assistance from an ice cream vendor, Emery, 17, who noted that customers were “coming out on almost every street” to cool down.
